The best day I have had on a bike was a text message. My buddy Leah won a P1/2 local roadrace on my birthday… we’d been doing really hard rides in the mtns above Malibu flogging the stuffing out of each other 5 hours at a time on Saturdays. She is tough and relentless and perpetually on the gas. And then yeah, recovery did involve my first pedicure. I woke up on my bday to this. It’s my favorite result.

Do you every try to do entire rides on the painted stripe? How about on the inside edge of the stripe? There’s a road in SoCal called Yerba Buena. The pavement is a mess and the easiest way up is to work the paint in the middle of the road. It really does make you smooth. You have one of those on your rides? Go out and ride the white stripe as much as you can. Make your front wheel the smoothest most predictable thing ever. Its the nicest thing you can do for the person behind you.

Sep 11  |  Do you remember bike blogs?

poached from that vplace.

There’s just so much more to these things that the bike blogs. Seems like everyone has one…. and I dunno. It gets self indulgent. Go ride.  Here’s a stolen image from V-Salon. Don’t know what the Vanilla fellas are up to.. I’m guessing bike making and such. I’m all healed up less getting hit by a car in my car the other day. Talking a buddy into going to Belguim with me next year to do a few weeks of masters kermesses with another friend that lives there in the summers. If nothing else that should motivate some riding over the winter. Have fun out there on your perfect bikes. Bike blogging is so bike blogging.

There’s no need to mythologize biking. It’s folly. It’s the best folly ever… but there’s no need to make it mean more than it means. Get a bike you have a connection to, work on how you ride, and that’s enough meanining. It’s as good as any meaning. That’s my take.
